Exploring Material Options for Plastic Sign Faces

Today, we’ll take a closer look at one of our most common questions:
“Which material is best for my project?”
We offer three durable plastic options—Polycarbonate, Acrylic, and Impact Modified Acrylic.

Acrylic – (Trade names: Plexiglas, Acrylite and Lucite)
Pros
-Of the three types we offer, it is the most rigid, meaning it will flex the least in the wind.
-It is the cheapest of the three materials.
-The easiest to glue and paint.
-Because the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun have almost no effect on acrylic, it has the longest life.
Cons
-It is the easiest to break.

Impact Modified Acrylic – (Trade names: Duraplex, Acrysteel and DR)
Pros
-About 4-8 times more impact resistant than acrylic.
-The UV rays from the sun have little effect on it.
-Can be glued and painted the same as acrylic.
Cons
-Not quite as rigid as acrylic.
-Costs more than acrylic.

Polycarbonate – (Trade names: Lexan, Tufflax and Sungard)
Pros
-The most impact resistant translucent material, but not unbreakable.
Cons
-Even with UV inhibitors, it will eventually yellow with age.
-When you peel off vinyl copy that has been on for a while, it will leave a“ghosting” effect where the vinyl was.
-It has very little chemical resistance making it harder to clean and glue, and easier to scratch.

Polycarbonate faces can be formed up to 8’ x 16’ without a seam, and acrylic faces up to 6’ x 14’. Larger faces can be manufactured with a J-Joint seam, allowing for oversized signage without sacrificing structural integrity.
Whether you need a flat face, custom embossing, or a painted pan, our team can fabricate your artwork — with the strength, scale, and consistency your project demands.
